Ultrarunning World Magazine Issue 27

With the new lockdown in place, the ultrarunning calendar has taken a new blow. Most European countries have some form of restriction and the focus, at least for the next few months is going to turn us inward again and giving us the opporunity to develop our patience and perserverance to deepen and strengthen our endurance. The rise of the FKT's and virtual races continues and the new situation will encourage people to explore themselves and their environment in a new way.

Issue 27 of Ultrarunning World magazine features race reports and articles that tend to reflect this. The cover story features US ultrarunner On-sponsored Katie Schide and her partner Germaine Grainger and their adventure that forms the basis for the short video, Taming Giants, climbing, hiking and running from Cervinia, Italy, to Chamonix, France. The project took place as most of their planned events were cancelled - a familiar story.
Tyler Andrews took on an an attempt at an Everest FKT and Adam Rykala has asquired an Amateur Radio license as an altertative to his use of Garmin tracking.
Theres a rasce report from Brisbane, Australia with Jess Willis who won the River Run100 in 2020.
WInter Yoga exercises from Susan Lister at Ananta Yoga studio help us align with deeper aspects of our bodies.
The magazine is free to subscribe to and free to download, well worth checking out and there's now a mobile-friendly version of the pdf.

Patrycja Bereznowska (POL) has broken American Katalin Nagy's 2015 record of 25:07:12 at this years Spartahlon in 24:48:18. Bereznowska won the World 24 Hour Championships in Belfast earlier this summer setting a new World record. This performance on her debut at this race, taking 6th place overall cements her position as currently the top ultrarunner.
Second place was Zsuzsanna Maraz (HUN) who finished third in 2016, cutting 2 hours off her last years time. Third was Aleksandra Niwinska also from Poland and who is outranked this year in the world so far only by Bereznowska. Niwinska's time makes her the fourth fastest woman at the event.

British Ultra Fest Oxford 2013

In less than three months the British Ultra Fest will kick off with the first 6 day race to take place in the UK for over 20 years.
The event will also feature 48 and 24 hour races - uncommon events on the UK ultrarunning calendar.
The explosion in trail running ultras in the UK has not seen an equal response as far as road running goes. With the amount of traffic on the roads it is hard to see a reversal of this trend.
Running for 6 days on a track doesn't appeal to many newcomers to the sport as the challenge is so intense few can handle the experience.
Some notable names will be racing at the event including the UK's leading multiday runner William Sichel and Richard Brown both famous in their own rights as holding many multiday records and no doubt intent on setting new benchmarks at the Radley College venue near Oxford.

An international field of depth is developing with runners from Japan, France, Italy, Finland, Greece, Sweden, USA and Israel already signed up.

The 48 hour is almost sold out. There have been less than a handful of 48 hour races ever to take place in the UK so age group records are ripe for the picking.

The 24 hour is also one of only a few track 24 hour races in the UK at this time. With the end of the Hull 24 hour, only the Self-Transcendence at Tooting Bec and the Belfast 24 hour at the Mary Peters track are currently taking place on an annual basis. With limits to how many people its possible to squeeze onto a track at a time, Radley is turning into another alternative for those wishing to qualify for the GB 24 hour team.

The event takes place starting August 11th 2013 at Radley College, near Abingdon, Oxford.

The Ultramarathon

He/She who runs ultramarathons is usually considered an ultrarunner.

An ultramarathon or an ultra, is any race involving running longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles).

There are two types of ultramarathon events: those that cover a specified distance, and events that take place during a specified time (with the winner covering the most distance in that time). The most common distances are 50 kilometres (31.069 mi), 100 kilometres (62.137 mi), 50 miles (80.467 km) and 100 miles (160.934 km), although many races have other distances. The 100 kilometers is an official IAAF world record event. Other distances/times include 24/48-hour races, and multiday races of 1000 miles or even longer.

The format of these events and the courses vary, ranging from single or multiple loops often on 400-meter tracks, to point-to-point road or trail races, to cross-country rogaines. Many ultramarathons, especially trail challenges, have severe course obstacles, such as inclement weather, elevation change, or rugged terrain. Many of these races, especially in the US are run on dirt roads or mountain paths, popularly known as trail running though some are run on paved roads as well. Usually, there are aid stations every 5 to 15 km apart, where runners can replenish food and drink supplies or take a short break.

Timed events range from 6, 12, and 24 hours to 3, 6 and 10 days - known as multidays. These events are generally run on a track or a short road course, often one mile or less.

The most popular form of multiday races are the stage races such as the Marathon des Sables which takes place every year in the Moroccan desert. The MdS is a 6 day stage race covering 254 km (156 miles).

In 2011 There will be a Trans-American race from LA to New York organised by French ultrarunner Serge Girard starting June 19th and lasting for 70 days.

Timed events present a slightly different challenge to runners as the runner has to create his own schedule in order to reduce non-running time to a minimum. The 6 day events are standard events that have a history dating back to the 1880's and in the ultrarunning rennaisance that began in the 1980's the re-establishment of annual 6 day races has inspired a whole new generation of ultrarunners to step up to the multiday challenge. Primary among these races are the Self-Transcendence 6 & 10 day races that take place each April in New York on a one mile loop in Flushing Meadow Park.

Multidays.com is a popular source of race information for multiday races and ultramarathons as well as many links to ultramarathon sites, ultrarunning resources and also to ultrarunners and other international news sites.

Ultrarunning World is a sister site to Multidays.com and publishes a magazine featuring race reports, news and a comprehensive ultramarathon calendar.
